Stairway to Heaven or the Road to Nowhere?

This week, Geoff Davis has been back to a site where he is now a regular visitor.

On a site where it is proposed to build some steps from a hotel and wedding venue, to access a private beach, via a cliff that is challenging both geotechnically and logistically, a pragmatic decision has been made to carry out the detailed investigation, design and construction of the foundations as the structure built, i.e. as parts of the coastal slope become safely accessible.

This approach has required close collaboration between the engineering geologists, the structural engineer and the specialist contractor.

This is definitely a situation where “the whole is greater than sum of its parts” (Aristotle).
